A few interesting trails in the area for a variety of fun hikes beginning behind Coldwater Campground; climb over Duck Pass to join John Muir trail: on to the forested hillside behind the campground, past Arrowhead, Skeleton, and Barney lakes

  • Side trail to Emerald Lake for an alternative route to Skeleton Lake or loop past Barret Lale returning to the west side of Lake Mary
  • Common destinations beyond Duck Pass are Duck Lake and nearby Purple Lake
  • Wilderness permits are required year-round for overnight trips in John Muir and Ansel Adams Wilderness

  • Between the white tower of Crystal Crag and the granite wall of Mammoth Crest, this is the highest road-accessible lake in the Lakes Basin

  • Access in winter is by ski or snowshow only

  • Follow the well worn path to the sign for McLeod Lake to the left, to find the lakes!
  • From Lake Mary Road outside Mammoth Lakes, continue straight for 5 miles to Horseshow Lake parking lot; the road closes seasonally, so access to the Upper Lakes Basin is best May- mid October

  • Do not let dogs dig too deep on the lake shores as CO2 levels could be high
  • Make sure not to let your dogs or small pets enter the tree-kill areas or adjacent roped off areas near Horseshoe Lake or any other lakeshores, as they are closer to ground where CO2 concentrations are more dense
  • Always carry a supply of fresh vater for your pets
